Polish fishermen reported an environmental catastrophe on the Oder – the mass death of fish in the river bordering Germany was caused by the discharge of a poisonous solvent into a reservoir.

Based on the measurements, acidification of the water in the river was not confirmed. On the contrary, the high level of oxygen in the water <…> and the high temperature of the water indicated its unnatural origin. It is possible that a substance with strong oxidizing properties has entered the water, due to which oxygen is released as a result of reactions occurring in water.

Problems are noted in several western Polish regions at once – the loss of fish has been noted in the West Pomeranian, Lubuskie, Lower Silesian, Opolskie and Silesian voivodeships.

Poisoned by a solvent tentatively classified as mesitylene and cadaveric poison, the water flows downstream, contaminating new territories in the process.
