Greece records its highest price increase in 28 years

Inflation in Greece in April 2022 was 10.2% year-on-year, with gas, electricity and diesel heating prices rising the most, according to the Greek statistical office Elstat.
Inflation surged to double digits in April from an annualized rate of 8.9% in March 2022, a 28-year high, the price has not risen since 1994.
In April this year, compared to the corresponding month last year, there was a significant increase in prices in the energy sector, namely, natural gas (122.6%), electricity (88.8%), diesel fuel for heating (65.1%), fuel lubricants (29%) and solid fuels (5.3%).
All the products that make up the so-called “housewife’s basket” have risen in price. In particular, prices increased for oils and fats (22%), meat in general (14.1%), vegetables (13.8%), dairy products and eggs (11.7%), bread and cereals (10%) , fresh fruit (8.6%), coffee, cocoa, tea (7.1%). Mineral water, soft drinks, fruit juices became more expensive by 3.8%, sugar, chocolate, sweets, ice cream – by 3.4%, fish – by 3.2%.
Sea passenger transportation (17.7%), passenger air transportation (15.8%), hotels and motels (16.1%), cinema tickets (13.9%), used cars (11.5%), new cars (8.9%).
