King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden who turns 75 years on April 30th opens up about his grief after Prince Philips’ passing away. The royal revealed his wish to see the Duke of Edinburgh one last time, Värvet reports.
For Sweden’s monarch, the death of Prince Philip became a shocking moment. Carl XVI Gustaf had no opportunity to attend the funeral of his dear friend earlier this month. Instead, he watched it on CNN.
Commenting on the saddest event, the monarch said it was a very emotional and beautiful funeral. Different and solemn.
“We had already started making contact a year ago, and tried to get the opportunity for a visit. I was afraid this would happen. Now Prince Philip was almost 100 years old, which in itself is wonderful,” the royal said.
King Carl Gustaf remembers he was just a teenager when he met Prince Philip for the first time. They were out sailing together, Philip was a great companion with a great sense of humour, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden said in an interview.
The Swedish Royal Family honoured the Duke of Edinburgh with a touching message to The Queen that was published when the death became known. Flags flew at half-mast on the day the Prince was buried and there was a ceremony in Riddarholmen Church in Stockholm as Prince Philip was the recipient of the Order of the Seraphim.
