Russia announced its continuing cooperation with Iran despite the US threats of sanctions, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.
The Iranian-Russian cooperation is guided exclusively by own interests and obligations of the two countries, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Thursday. The only international law is able to have an impact on the relationship between Moscow and Tehran, the diplomat added.
Russia has no intentions to stop cooperating with Iran even the White House’s threats of sanctions. Moreover, Russia condemns US intentions to restore United Nations sanctions against Iran, Ryabkov said.
On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo threatened to punish those countries that oppose its effort to re-impose sanctions on Iran.
According to Mr Ryabkov, it is deeply regrettable that as a result of Washington’s irresponsible actions, the UN Security Council is plunging into a very serious crisis. That situation really distracts the Security Council from working on a wide range of issues within its mandate and creates certain political and psychological tensions.
Despite the White House’s latest moves on Iran, Kremlin will continue to cooperate with the United States because without dialogue the situation could become even worse, Ryabkov said.
