Amelie Mauresmo, a two-time Grand Slam champion, withdraws as Davis Cup captain for French team WTA reported. the tennis legend will begin working with Lucas Pouille in preparation for his new season instead.
The 39-year-old Mauresmo had been offered the captaincy in June following the departure of Yannick Noah. A French champion said she will be focusing on her singles coaching instead, while her new student Lucas Pouille is very happy with such a news. The 24-year-old World No 32 thanked the French Tennis Federation for enabling him to work with Mauresmo.
‘I am very happy to start my new collaboration with @AmeMauresmo! Her experience as a player and coach can help me achieve my goals,’ he wrote on Twitter. ‘I’m sure we’re going to do great things together.’
Earlier, Amelie has been demonstrating wonderful results being a coach to the former World No.1 Andy Murray in 2014, she has also served as captain of France’s Fed Cup team right after Yannick Noah left that position. Mr Noah coached the national Davis Cup team to the final but they lost to Croatia.
It is worth to note that Mauresmo is the first ever woman to coach a high-profile male player when she teamed up with the British champion, would have become the first woman to captain the French Davis Cup team. According to the schedule, Amelie’s new student will team up with Alize Cornet for France at the 2019 Hopman Cup in the first week in 2019, before heading to Sydney to open his 2019 ATP World Tour campaign.
