Iceberg of giant size breaks off from the ice shelf, Antarctica is full of surprises both for scientists and common people. An iceberg weights one trillion tonnes and is four times size of London.
The huge iceberg has broken away from an ice shelf in Antarctica, the piece of ice weights one trillion tonnes, that is the record in the history of the modern glaciology.
According to the scientists, the rift had finally completed its path through the ice, causing the 5,800 square km iceberg to snap off. The crack happened in the Larsen C Ice Shelf, the researchers announced on Wednesday.
Iceberg: details of the unbelievable process
The glaciologist Professor Adrian Luckman of Swansea University says that the Larsen C Ice Shelf left the huge part of its territory, which is more than four times the size of London.
Such a crack reduces the size of the Larsen C Ice Shelf by around 12 percent, this natural process undoubtedly will change the landscape of the Antarctic Peninsula, the changes are irreversible.the team from the Swansea University-led Midas project said.
The researchers’ team from the Swansea University-led Midas project note that an iceberg got its personal name – A68, the huge mass of ice broke away at some time between Monday and Wednesday. The final breakthrough was detected in data from Nasa’s Aqua MODIS satellite instrument.
