Wizz Air has suspended flights to Israel and Jordan.

Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air announced that it is suspending flights to Israel and Jordan until August 4 due to the worsening situation in the region.

“Due to the worsening situation in the region, Wizz Air is temporarily suspending flights to/from Israel and Jordan until August 4 inclusive,” the airline said in a statement on its social network.

On Wednesday, the Palestinian Hamas movement announced the death of the head of the movement’s Politburo, Ismail Haniyeh, as a result of an Israeli strike on his residence in Tehran, where he arrived to participate in the inauguration of the new Iranian president. The movement blamed Israel and the United States for Haniyeh’s death and said the attack would not go unanswered.

Late Wednesday, the New York Times, citing sources, claimed that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei ordered a direct strike on Israel in response to the killing of Haniyeh in Tehran. Later, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Amir Said Irvani, said at a Security Council meeting that Tehran, following international law, reserves the right to self-defense in order to respond to the murder of Haniya when it deems it necessary. He also stated that the assassination would not have happened without US intelligence support for Israel. Iran’s mission to the UN also called on the Security Council to impose sanctions against Israel for acts of aggression.
