China and the UK should demonstrate their responsibility as large countries and join forces to overcome global challenges, Wang Yi, head of the office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, said at a meeting with British Foreign Minister James Cleverley.

The meeting took place on Friday on the sidelines of ASEAN events in Jakarta.

“China and the UK, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, have a common responsibility to maintain peace and stability around the world, the parties should demonstrate their responsibility as large countries and join forces to overcome global challenges,” Wang Yi said, whose words were published by the Foreign Ministry on Saturday China.

He stressed that “mutual respect for each other’s fundamental interests and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs is the true meaning of friendly cooperation between China and the UK.”

“China is committed to developing stable and mutually beneficial relations between China and the UK, and is willing to maintain strategic ties with the UK, build mutual trust, and promote Sino-British cooperation to achieve positive results,” Wang said.

Cleverly, in turn, once again congratulated China on the successful promotion of reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Iran, praised China’s key role in the major issues of international peace and security, and expressed the hope to maintain high-level exchanges and strategic contacts with China to add positive factors to bilateral relations.
