The French energy company TotalEnergies and the Italian Eni announced the discovery of large deposits of natural gas off the coast of Cyprus, their volume is estimated at 70 billion cubic meters.
⠀⠀
We are talking about the Calypso-1 gas field, discovered in 2018. The work is carried out by Eni Cyprus, partners in it own equal shares. Well Cronos-1, which made it possible to talk about the find, was the fourth well drilled by the operator.
⠀⠀
The Italian company believes that a new well in this area, 160 kilometers away from the coast of the island, will allow us to talk about additional volumes.
⠀⠀
Eni has been operating in Cyprus since 2013. It is the operator of blocks 2,3,6,8 and 9, and also owns shares in blocks 7 and 11, where TotalEnergies is the operator.
⠀
The development of new gas fields for Europe remains an extremely important task amid plans to minimize fuel supplies from Russia. For this purpose, the region also plans to increase the use of alternative energy sources and increase supplies from other suppliers.
⠀
⠀
Russia, in turn, continues to insist that it is a reliable supplier of energy resources. At the same time, in early September, Gazprom does not rule out a complete shutdown of the Nord Stream gas pipeline for maintenance of the last operational turbine. The European Union is confident that this situation is not due to technical difficulties, but to political pressure.
