The US Secret Service will continue to employ women, despite criticism after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, it follows from a joint statement by the heads of several US law enforcement agencies.

“It is with great pride that we at the Department of Homeland Security, the federal government’s largest law enforcement organization, will… continue to recruit… women into our law enforcement ranks,” the statement, which was signed by US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and US Secret Service chief Kimberly Cheatle said.

“After the assassination attempt on former President Trump, some people made public statements questioning the presence of women in law enforcement, including the US Secret Service. These statements are baseless and offensive,” the authors of the statement emphasize.

Last Saturday, July 13, there was a shooting at Trump’s campaign speech in Pennsylvania, the ex-president was wounded in the ear, one of the spectators was killed, and two others were critically injured. The US Secret Service said it had killed a suspect who fired several shots towards the stage. He was reported to be hiding on the roof of a production building about 100 meters from the stage, outside the event area.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on July 17 that it would conduct an investigation into the Secret Service’s efforts to provide security for Donald Trump during his campaign rally. The FBI is investigating the incident as “an assassination attempt and possible domestic terrorism.” The FBI identified the suspect as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
