The Thai Foreign Ministry commented on its intention to join BRICS.

Thailand’s planned entry into BRICS is an opportunity to join the voice of the Global South and become a BRICS mediator in relations with the West in the interests of global peace, stability and prosperity, Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikondet Phalangkoon said at a media briefing in Bangkok on Thursday.

The head of the information department of the Thai Foreign Ministry answered a question from journalists about what motivates Thailand in its desire to join BRICS.

“BRICS is an association of countries with rapidly developing economies, which also have significant natural resources and have influence in world politics and economics both now and in the future. This association is also the voice of the developing countries of the world in world politics,” he noted.

For Thailand, membership in BRICS means joining a community that expresses the interests of the Global South, whose importance in the world is constantly growing,” Phalangkun said, recalling that the country’s Cabinet of Ministers had already decided on May 28 this year to send a statement of intent to join the organization to BRICS.

“It is also important for us that by joining the organization, Thailand will be able to use the (political) resource of BRICS, as a country that maintains friendly relations with everyone in the world and strives for the development and growth of international cooperation in all areas and in all formats in the common interests of all countries and peoples, Thailand will be able to become an important link in BRICS relations with other countries,” he added.

“Another factor is that we think that Thailand, having become a member of BRICS, is able to strengthen the position of BRICS in the region (Southeast Asia), so to speak, the geographical representation of BRICS,” said the official representative of the Thai Foreign Ministry.

He emphasized that there are also mutually beneficial strategic aspects of Thailand’s entry into BRICS, including the fact that Thailand, which maintains friendly relations with Western countries, “can become a kind of connecting link, a good “bridge” for the BRICS countries in their relations with Western countries“, acting in the interests of achieving global peace, stability and prosperity, as well as the fact that Thailand’s membership will be able to bring closer together the geopolitical positions of the BRICS countries and Thailand’s views on geopolitical issues.
