The National People’s Power (NPP) coalition, led by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s People’s Liberation Front party, won a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections, gaining a majority of seats in the country’s legislature. This was announced by the Election Commission of Sri Lanka.

61.56% of voters (6.8 million people) voted for the NBB. It won 159 of the 225 parliamentary seats. The United People’s Power (UPS) alliance with its leader Sajith Premadasa again becomes the main opposition party, for which 17.66%, or 1.9 million people, voted. It will have 40 seats in parliament, up from 54 in the previous convocation. The Sri Lanka Tamil State Party won 8 seats, and nine other parties received between one and five seats.

Voting in the Sri Lankan parliamentary elections took place on Thursday. About 17 million citizens on the island have the right to vote, who were given the opportunity to determine the new composition of parliament for the next five years.

The National People’s Power coalition unites about 20 parties and organizations of the left and center-left, including youth, women’s and trade union associations. The leading force is the People’s Liberation Front party, whose leader, current President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is also the leader of the NNV coalition.
