The eruption occurred on the Minamidaki crater of the Sakurajima volcano; volcanic smoke reached a height of five thousand meters above the crater, NHK TV channel reports, citing data from the metrological service.

On Wednesday morning, a volcano erupted on the island of Suwanose, also in Japan’s southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima. The Japan Meteorological Agency raised the alert to level three, and a crisis headquarters was created at the Prime Minister’s Office.

“On the evening of February 14, there was an explosive eruption of the active Sakurajima volcano in the city of Kagoshima, volcanic smoke rose to a height of five thousand meters above the crater,” the TV channel said in a statement.

It is noted that volcanic smoke reached such a height for the first time since 2020. In addition, large volcanic blocks were seen flying from the crater to a height of up to 1.3 thousand meters. However, the level of volcanic danger remains unchanged – at level three.

Large amounts of ash are expected to fall in the area Thursday morning.
