The Prime Minister of India has resigned.

The Prime Minister of India has resigned.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Indian President Draupadi Murmu on Wednesday afternoon and tendered his resignation, the Presidential Secretariat said.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the President today and tendered his resignation along with the Cabinet. The President accepted the resignation and requested Narendra Modi and the Cabinet to continue working until the new government takes office,” the statement said.

According to the established procedure, following the results of parliamentary elections, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Ministers of India must resign, but carry out their duties until the formation of a new government.

As a result of the elections held in India, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party won 240 seats in parliament, 32 less than the simple majority of 272 votes out of 543 required to form a government.

At the same time, taking into account the votes of the parties included in the National Democratic Alliance led by Modi’s party, this political association gains 292 seats in parliament, which allows it to form a new government, which, most likely, will become a coalition.
