The Prime Minister of Finland does not consider the breakdown of the submarine cable to be sabotage.

Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo said that it is too early to consider the breakdown of the submarine cable between Finland and Germany in the Baltic Sea as “sabotage.”

“It is impossible to say yet whether this is “sabotage.” Therefore, I would not rush to conclusions yet,” he said at a press conference in Espoo, Finland.

According to Orpo, after the authorities’ investigation, a more detailed assessment of the incident will be given. The prime minister also said that he is in contact with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal.

Finnish operator Cinia Oy said on Monday that the undersea telecommunications cable between Finland and Germany C-Lion1 had been damaged and the cable was out of service. Germany and Finland later said they were concerned about damage to the undersea communications cable and a thorough investigation was underway. The Finnish Central Criminal Police has already received a request to investigate the broken communication cable from Cinia Oy.

Lithuanian and Swedish media later reported that the undersea communications cable between Sweden and Lithuania was also damaged, and Swedish authorities are investigating. Swedish police said they had launched a preliminary investigation into the cliffs in the Baltic Sea.
