The post-war famine may be recognized as genocide in Moldova

Speaker of the Parliament of Moldova Igor Grosu said on TVR Moldova that deputies are considering the possibility of recognizing the famine of 1946-1947 as genocide, following the example of the “Holodomor”.

There was a famine in Moldova in the post-war years 1946-1947. According to various estimates, from 70 to 200 thousand people died because of this.

Journalists asked Grosu whether the famine in Moldova could be recognized as genocide by analogy with the “Holodomor” in Ukraine.

“We have such a discussion and there are opinions that it is not enough to have only a condemning declaration and honor these tragic events, but also to come out with such an initiative,” Grosu said.

In October, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution recognizing the “Holodomor” of 1932-1933 as “genocide of the Ukrainian people.” The Russian Federation, in turn, denies and does not recognize the concept of “Holodomor”, as well as the mass famine of the 30s in Ukraine as targeted genocide.
