The EC will launch a strategic dialogue on the future of the automotive industry.

The strategic dialogue on the future of the automotive industry in Europe, previously promised by the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, will be launched in January 2025, the EC said in a statement.

The head of the European Commission in the European Parliament in November this year promised to conduct a dialogue with EU automakers over the next five years to maintain production in Europe, despite the deep crisis in the industry.

“The dialogue will be officially launched in January 2025 with the aim of promptly proposing and implementing measures that the sector urgently needs,” the document states.

It notes that both automakers and specialized trade unions, business organizations, and related industries will be involved in the discussion.

“The outcome of these meetings will be a set of recommendations that will help build a coherent EU strategy for the sector to cope with various challenges and, if necessary, adapt the applicable EU regulatory framework accordingly,” the EC emphasized.

The automotive industry in the EU countries is going through hard times, including due to the energy crisis, which followed a sharp reduction in energy purchases from Russia. European manufacturers are reporting lower demand and overstocking amid strong competition from electric vehicle makers, including China. A number of automakers have announced the closure of production in the EU.

It was previously reported that in 10 years the EU wants to ban the sale of cars with internal combustion engines as part of the “climate neutrality” policy.
