The victims and injured in a fire at a nursing home in Milan led to smoke, the flames did not spread throughout the building, the mayor of the city, Giuseppe Sala said.

The fire, the fire department said, killed six people. Sala visited the emergency site on Friday morning. On Sky TG24, he stated that the nursing home was run by a private company. According to him, the fire occurred in one of the rooms, but did not spread to the entire building.

“Smoke led to the dead and injured. While the reasons are unknown, it is known for sure that the flames did not engulf other rooms, other rooms,” Sala said.

According to the regional emergency service, 81 people were admitted to hospitals, two of them are in serious condition. All patients received poisoning by combustion products, without traces of burns. The fire department is ruling out the possibility of arson and says it was an accident.

In total, 173 patients were in institutions for the care of seriously ill, disabled and elderly people. The age of the victims ranges from 56 to 87 years. The charred bodies of two women were found in the room from which the fire is believed to have started.
