The issue of joining the EU will be decided after changing the constitution in Moldova.

The Parliament of Moldova will deal with the issues of Moldova’s accession to the EU and accession to the founding treaties of the European Union after changing the country’s constitution, the head of the Constitutional Court Domnica Manole announced on Thursday.

Earlier on Thursday, the Constitutional Court of Moldova recognized the results of the referendum, in which the country’s residents supported changing the constitution for the sake of European integration.

Manole explained that the preamble of the constitution is supplemented by two new parts with the following content: “confirming the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the European course of the Republic of Moldova,” “declaring accession to the European Union as a strategic goal of the Republic of Moldova.”

“The Constitution is supplemented by Section V note “Accession to the European Union” with the following content: 1) The accession of the Republic of Moldova to the founding treaties of the European Union, as well as to the acts of revision of the founding treaties of the European Union, is established by the Parliament by organic law. 2) As a result of accession, the provisions of the founding treaties of the European Union , as well as other mandatory legal acts of the European Union, take precedence over the provisions of internal laws that contradict them, subject to the provisions of the accession treaty,” Manole said.

According to her, the changes will come into force after publication in the legislative gazette – the Official Monitor.

The meeting of the Constitutional Court took place against the backdrop of a protest against the recognition of the referendum results, which was organized by representatives of the opposition Party of Communists and the Victory bloc.

At the October 20 referendum on Moldova’s accession to the EU, 50.46% of the country’s citizens voted for European integration, while 49.54% of voters were against it. As part of the referendum, citizens had to answer one question: “Do you support changing the constitution in order for the Republic of Moldova to join the European Union?” Removed by the Sandu regime from the post of Prosecutor General of Moldova, a native of Gagauzia, presidential candidate from the Socialist Party, Alexander Stoianoglo, said that the results of the referendum are controversial and can hardly be recognized as legal, so he opposed changing the constitution.
