At least 250 people are considered missing as a result of floods in eastern Spain, the Español newspaper writes, citing sources.
⠀
The Spanish government has declared three days of official mourning for the victims of the rains and floods. The disaster has severely damaged road infrastructure in Valencia, the worst-hit region in eastern Spain, resulting in more than 60 road closures.
⠀
“Authorities estimate that the number of missing people could be as high as 250,” unnamed unofficial sources involved in the rescue efforts told the newspaper.
⠀
The publication adds that the main rescue work is being carried out in the most affected areas, for example in the city of Chiva, Valencia province.
⠀
According to the newspaper, rescue services continue to find many bodies of the dead, mostly “in garages.”
⠀
“There are hundreds of cars overturned on the highway (near the town of Chiv), and there are probably people inside them,” the newspaper notes.
⠀
Earlier, the newspaper 20minutos reported that the death toll as a result of heavy rains and floods in Spain had risen to 158.
⠀
The local agency Europa Press reported that electricity was gradually being restored in the province of Valencia. If on Wednesday 155 thousand houses were left without electricity, now there are only 40 thousand.
