The Holy See criticized the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

The Vatican expressed regret over the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the Holy See said in an official statement.

“The Holy See was saddened by some of the scenes during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris and can only join the voices raised in recent days to express regret at the insult caused to many Christians and believers of other religions,” the document said.

At such a prestigious event there should be no hint of ridicule of the religious beliefs of many people, and freedom of speech should be limited by respect for other people, the press release emphasizes.

The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games took place on July 26. Social media users around the world were outraged by the participation of transvestites and representatives of the LGBT community in the show, especially the parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” The Games’ director of communications, Anne Descamps, apologized to people whose feelings may have been offended by some scenes from the opening ceremony, in particular the parody of The Last Supper.
