The head of the Ugandan Foreign Ministry accused the West of blackmailing African countries.

Uganda welcomes the search for an alternative to the SWIFT payment system to counter blackmail and politicization of financial transactions by the West, said Ugandan Foreign Minister Jeje Odongo.

According to him, the West is actually blackmailing African countries if it does not agree with their political course, threatening to turn off payment systems. Such sanctions, he admitted, could also be imposed due to ties of any African state with Russia.

“An alternative to the existing SWIFT is something desirable, something that we should explore so that, like Africa, we have options. You can use SWIFT or you can use what the Russians are developing so that in case of blackmail, politicization of financial transactions there are options,” the minister said.
