Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East and the situation of the Uighurs in China with the new Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who arrived in Ankara on Wednesday, a Turkish diplomatic source said.

New Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, appointed to this position on Tuesday, arrived in Ankara on Wednesday on his first official foreign visit.

“During the talks, the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East, the global financial system was assessed. The situation of the Uighurs in China was also discussed,” the source said.

The ministers also discussed ways to increase investment for a more balanced structure of Turkey’s bilateral trade with China.


In addition, Fidan and Wang Yi discussed more effective use of dialogue and consultation mechanisms between the two countries, including through the intergovernmental committee. The initiatives “One Belt – One Road” and “Middle Corridor” (Trans-Caspian Transport Route), problems of nuclear energy, agriculture, civil aviation, culture and tourism were also discussed.


Wang Yi is expected to be received by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.


Earlier, the Chinese Parliament announced the removal of Qin Gang from the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs and the appointment of Wang Yi, head of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs.
