The ex-prince was asked to give up the status of honorary citizen of London

The corporation of the City of London has asked the king’s brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to voluntarily renounce the status of honorary citizen of London, the Independent reports.

“The elected members of the Corporation of the City of London have officially proposed to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to give up the status of freeman,” the newspaper writes.

The status of a freeman in the Middle Ages meant a full-fledged citizen. Currently, it is an honorary title awarded by the city authorities for services to the city.

According to the newspaper, this award was inherited by Mountbatten-Windsor from Prince Philip in 2012.

“The corporation stated that there is no current legal mechanism for depriving a freeman of inherited status, therefore, it offered him to voluntarily renounce it,” the newspaper writes.

Earlier, the ex-prince had already been stripped of the status of honorary citizen of York, the newspaper notes.

Former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was detained in late February in a case of abuse of office as a trade representative for sending government documents to Epstein. Andrew has been at the center of a scandal for several years because of his ties to Epstein. In early December 2025, Charles III stripped his brother of all titles.
