The electrical system in Cuba was completely shut down.

In Cuba, the national electrical system was completely shut down after an automatic operation at the Antonio Guiteras thermal power plant in the province of Matanzas, the management company Union Electrica reported.

“At 02:08 at night there was a complete blackout of the national electricity system SEN due to the automatic shutdown of the thermal power plant,” the statement said.

This has already happened in the country. The previous blackout in Cuba occurred when power was cut due to the threat of Hurricane Rafael. The disaster left behind serious damage, knocking down several high-voltage power lines, which prevented timely restoration of power supply.

The generation deficit also aggravates the situation on the island. It is associated with a shortage of fuel and repair work at dilapidated thermal power plants.
