The Central Election Commission of Armenia has authorized the collection of signatures on the issue of the country’s accession to the EU.

The Central Election Commission of Armenia has agreed to create an initiative group to launch the process of collecting signatures on the issue of the country’s accession to the European Union, the CEC press service reported Thursday.

In June, the Armenian Parliament held hearings on the feasibility of holding a referendum on Armenia’s application to join the European Union. The initiative to hold the hearings was taken by the platform of democratic forces, uniting pro-Western politicians and public figures.

“At the regular meeting on September 11, the Central Election Commission of Armenia agreed to the proposal to form an initiative group to submit for discussion (by parliament) the draft law “On the beginning of the process of accession of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union” as a civil initiative. Artak Haykazi Zeynalyan was appointed as the plenipotentiary representative of the initiative group “, the message says.

It is clarified that the collection of signatures will take place from September 16 to November 14, 2024.

To submit a draft law for discussion in the National Assembly, the signatures of 50 thousand citizens are required.
