Scholz’s Social Democrats win elections in Brandeburg, exit poll shows.

Scholz’s Social Democrats win elections in Brandeburg, exit poll shows.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) wins regional elections in Brandenburg with 32% of the vote, while the right-wing Alternative for Germany party comes second with 29%, according to exit poll data from research group Wahlen for the ZDF TV channel.

According to the survey, in addition to the SPD and the AfD, two more parties are entering the state parliament (Landtag): the recently formed Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SUV) party with 12% of the votes and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with 11.5 % of votes.

The SPD’s two partners in the federal governing coalition – the Greens and the Free Liberals (FDP) – are at risk of missing out on seats in the Landtag, as a poll predicts their result below the 5% threshold.

If this forecast turns out to be correct, the SPD will receive 33 seats in the Landtag out of 88, the AfD – 30, the SSV – 13, and the CDU – 12 seats.

A high turnout of 73% is also predicted.
