Residents of Honduras demonstrated against the denunciation of the agreement with the United States.

Residents of Honduras demonstrated in the capital Tegucigalpa to protest against the denunciation of an extradition agreement with the United States, local television channel HCH reports.

At the end of August, Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced that the government, in response to unacceptable interventionism and attempts to direct its policies by the United States, was terminating the extradition agreement with this country. Castro’s statement came after US Ambassador to Tegucigalpa Laura Dogu expressed her country’s concerns about a meeting between Honduran defense officials and the “drug trafficker” – Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez, who is under US sanctions.

“Residents of the capital took to the streets to oppose the government of Xiomara Castro after the denunciation of the extradition agreement,” the channel’s website reports.

As the TV channel notes on its account on the social network X, tear gas was used against the demonstrators. In turn, the country’s police said that it was done by someone from the crowd.

“We regret that gas from a tear gas grenade was discovered during the demonstration, which was probably used by demonstrators to blame the National Police. We reiterate that for more than two years, the National Police has seized and stored all tear gas grenades… , and no officer is authorized to carry or use them,” according to a police press release issued by X.

The demonstrators were also outraged by a video showing a relative of the head of state, Carlos Zelaya, meeting with drug dealers, and called on the country’s president to resign.
