China is shocked that the United States vetoed Brazil’s draft resolution on the situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip, Chinese Permanent Representative to the UN Zhang Jun said at a UN Security Council meeting.

“We must say that we are shocked. It’s hard to believe. The Russian resolution was dedicated to the protection of civilians, many countries supported it. And then they also voted against that resolution, explaining that it was necessary to give time to consider the resolution that Brazil presented “Colleagues agreed with the request and postponed the meeting,” Zhang Jun said.
⠀
“And over the past 40-odd hours, no objections have been expressed to the Brazilian project, and we hoped that today they would vote for this resolution. The results of the vote are difficult to believe,” he added.

Previously, the United States vetoed Brazil’s draft resolution.

Previously, Brazil prepared a draft resolution that condemned the “Hamas terrorist attack” on October 7. The document called for the cancellation of the Israeli order for Gazans and UN representatives to move from the north to the south of the strip. The draft called for the immediate release of the hostages without preconditions. The document did not contain a separate call for a ceasefire, but the draft called for the announcement of humanitarian pauses to ensure humanitarian access for UN employees and other humanitarian organizations. The draft called for the immediate unconditional release of the hostages.
