Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban opposed the re-election of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for a second term due to her “low results” in office.

When asked why Orban wants to prevent von der Leyen from being re-elected, the Hungarian prime minister spoke about her failures.

“Because of its poor results. The green transformation is a total failure of management, the migration package does not solve a single problem. Europe needs better leadership. There are enough talented politicians who can (do it),” Orban said.

Speaking about the results of the elections to the European Parliament, the politician also noted the weak successes of the previous EP.

“The last five years were probably the worst five years in the history of the European Union. The results of the European Commission and the elite in Brussels were weak. In the context of democratic national elections, this would not be enough to continue the work,” he said.

The election results showed that Europeans want change, but Orban said the leadership will remain the same governing coalition.

“I’m not happy with what’s happening. We have a structural problem,” he added.

Von der Leyen is seeking a second term as head of the European Commission. To be re-elected, EU leaders must propose her candidacy for voting at the plenary session of the new European Parliament, where she will need to receive at least 361 votes from deputies.

On Monday, an informal summit of EU countries is taking place in Brussels, where they are discussing the strategic agenda of this institution for the next five years, as well as candidates for the posts of heads of the European Commission, the European Council and European diplomacy.
