Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus discussed the situation in Bangladesh over the phone, X Indian Prime Minister spoke about the conversation on his social network account.

“Received a phone call from Prof. Muhammad Yunus. Exchanged views on the current situation. Reaffirmed India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh. He assured the protection and safety of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh,” Modi wrote.

The conversation between the two leaders took place eight days after the interim government of Bangladesh led by Muhammad Yunus was sworn in and 11 days after anti-government student protests and riots that began in June and continued until August 5, 2024, forced the government Bangladeshi Minister Sheikh Hasina fell, and Sheikh Hasina herself was forced to leave the country and seek temporary asylum in India.

Indian authorities have repeatedly expressed deep concern in recent weeks about the safety of Hindu communities in predominantly Muslim Bangladesh and have drawn the attention of Bangladeshi leaders to attacks during the unrest on Hindu temples, communities and businesses owned by Bangladeshi Hindu citizens. According to Indian Foreign Ministry statements issued over the past few days, Indian authorities are in constant contact with the command of the Bangladesh armed forces and the country’s new civilian authorities.


At the same time, India, starting from August 5-6, is strengthening border security with neighboring Bangladesh.
