Ovidio Guzmán López, a son of the odious Mexican druglord “El Chapo”, was located on Thursday. As CBS News reported, one of the most wanted in the US criminals on drug trafficking charges caused a violent scene on the streets of the city. Sinaloa public safety director Cristóbal Castañeda told there were people wounded but did not provide a casualty figure.
The capital of Mexico’s Sinaloa state was almost paralyzed on Thursday. The gunbattle broke out after security forces located one of El Chapo’s sons.
On Thursday, 30 members of the National Guard and army were patrolling in Culiacan when they were fired on from a house. They repelled the attack and inside the house found Ovidio Guzmán López.
The house was then surrounded by heavily armed gunmen who had “a greater force” and authorities decided to suspend the operation, Mr Durazo said.
“With the goal of safeguarding the well-being and tranquility of Culiacan society, officials in the security cabinet decided to suspend the actions,” said Durazo without saying if Ovidio Guzmán was arrested or went free.
According to José Luis González Meza, a lawyer for “El Chapo’s” family, Guzmáns insists “Ovidio is alive and free” with no further details.
Culiacan had not seen such a scene for almost a decade when the Sinaloa Cartel was experiencing an internal war.
El Chapo’s sons are also wanted criminals
Guzmán’s sons are criminals too, while ‘El Chapo’ jailed, his sons are running the family business. Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo are known as “los Chapitos,” or “the little Chapos”. Together with Ovidio, all three men are believed to currently run their father’s Sinaloa Cartel with some participation of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
But Ovidio Guzmán was indicted in 2018 by a grand jury in Washington, along with a fourth brother, for the alleged trafficking of cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana.
Localization of Ovidio Guzman caused a chaos in Sinaloa state capital
The scene resembling a war zone, with gunmen, some wearing black ski masks over their faces, riding in the back of trucks firing mounted machine guns as vehicles burned. Localization of El Chapo’s son caused chaos in the city, paralyzed several districts and brought a psychosis in the normal life of Culiacan.
Sinaloa public safety director Castañeda did not rule out that there were deaths but confirmed there are injured.
Gov. Quirino Ordaz confirmed that school classes had been suspended but that businesses would open on Friday.
