McCarthy accepted his resignation as Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy admitted that he would lose his post if members of the Democratic Party and five fellow Republicans voted for his removal.

“If five Republicans join the Democrats, I will be removed,” McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday.

At the same time, assessing his own chances of holding the post, he said that he was confident that he could sit in the speaker’s chair without the help of the Democratic Party. McCarthy also confirmed that a vote on his removal would take place on Tuesday.

On Monday, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz filed a motion to remove McCarthy as speaker.

The motion Gaetz filed Monday night is for “privileged resolution” rights. This means that it takes precedence over other issues for the House of Representatives and must be considered within two days.

McCarthy himself has previously repeatedly expressed his belief that he will retain his post, despite criticism from the far right wing of the Republican Party.

Member of the House of Representatives of the American Congress, eccentric Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, in turn, supported Gaetz’s desire for changes in the legislative body, but noted that no changes should be expected until former President Donald Trump returns to the post of head of state.
