At least four people were killed and about 160,000 were left without power after Hurricane Debbie hit the US east coast, NBC reported.

“Two people were killed in a car crash in Dixie County, Florida, late last night, including a twelve-year-old boy, bringing the death toll from ‘Debbie’ to at least four,” the station said in a statement.

More than 158,000 people are reported to be without power in Florida and Georgia.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 61 counties in the state.


US President Joe Biden approved the request of the Governor of South Carolina to declare a state of emergency in the state.


Earlier, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that tropical storm Debbie had strengthened to hurricane level, reaching speeds of 120 kilometers per hour. The hurricane has already reached the coast of Florida, and a storm warning is also in effect for a stretch of coastline in the states of Georgia and South Carolina.
