Forecasters announced the penultimate, orange level of threat in Istanbul for the weekend due to hurricane speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour in some places and downpours; warnings also apply to a number of other regions of Turkey.

“From Saturday morning, a north and northwest wind-hurricane at a speed of 50-70 kilometers per hour is expected throughout the entire Marmara Sea region and Istanbul, and on Sunday it will intensify to 70-90 kilometers per hour, in some places up to 110 kilometers per hour,” – the warning from the General Department of Meteorology says.

Heavy downpours are also expected. Forecasters warned that the hurricane could uproot trees and tear off roofs.

Istanbul provincial leaders also urged citizens to be careful due to the risk of flooding and transport problems.

Forecasters warned of powerful hurricanes in many areas of Turkey from Denizli province in the west to Erzurum in the east, including the resort province of Antalya.

Turkish Airlines announced the cancellation of about 40 domestic and international flights on Saturday due to difficult weather conditions in Istanbul.
