On the night of January 3, 2020, the United States carried out an operation in Baghdad to eliminate the commander of the IRGC special forces, Qassem Soleimani, and the deputy head of the Iraqi Shiite militia, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. In Washington, they are considered involved in organizing the attack on the American embassy in Baghdad on December 31, 2019.

In response, Iran launched strikes on American bases in Iraq, including Ain al-Assad. Initially, then-US President Donald Trump and Pentagon officials said there were no casualties after the attack. Then the military was forced to admit that there were wounded. At the same time, their number was constantly increasing.
