Huge Antarctic iceberg poised to break away

An Antarctic iceberg of the Larsen C ice shelf soon to break away, said the geologists. According to the statistic, it should be one of the 10 largest long-running rift ever, the huge fragment of the shelf is almost ready to break away from Antarctica.

The scientists say that the Larsen C ice shelf will soon the historical place on the Earth because the huge fragment of it is almost ready to break away from the mother iceberg. The Larsen C (northern major ice shelf in Antarctica) is the place, in which very interested the researchers from Swansea. he geologists explain the irreversibility of the upcoming process.

According to the science, the loss of a piece a quarter of the size of Wales will leave the whole shelf vulnerable to possible break-ups. The scientists have been watching Larse C for many years, they registered some trepidation after the collapse of Larsen A ice shelf (1995) and the sudden break-up of the Larsen B shelf (2002).

Larsen BIn 2016, the geologist and glaciologists from UK’s Project Midas informed on the Larsen C rift was growing fast. But in December the speed of the rift went into overdrive, growing by a further 18km in just a couple of weeks.

The Professor Luckman believes this is a geographical and not a climate event. The rift has been present for decades. It is believed that climate warming has brought forward the likely separation of the iceberg but the scientists say they have no direct evidence to support this.
