Georgia plans to build a new international airport near Tbilisi.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced on Monday a decision to build a new international airport near Tbilisi.

“We came to a decision on the need to build a new airport, which will be international, of a modern level. The most optimal place for this seems to be Vaziani, a former airfield. We want to invite the best architects, designers and specialists to study this place and make a final decision,” – said the prime minister at a government meeting on Monday.

According to him, initially it was planned to upgrade and expand the existing international airport in Tbilisi, but due to certain restrictions, a decision was made to build an air harbor in a new location.
Vaziani is a strategically important military air base located 20 kilometers east of the Georgian capital Tbilisi. International military exercises are usually held there.

The current Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi International Airport is operated by the Turkish holding TAV Airports and was upgraded in 2007.
