Fukuyama called Trump’s possible re-election a disaster for Europe.

World-famous American philosopher and political scientist Francis Fukuyama believes that the re-election of Donald Trump as US President in 2024 will be a “catastrophe for Europe.”

Fukuyama stated this during a discussion with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Economist Government Roundtable in Athens.

When Mitsotakis was asked about Trump’s re-election scenario and what it would mean for Europe, the prime minister chose not to predict the outcome of the US elections and focused on the close relationship between Greece and the US.

“Greece and the United States have a strategic partnership that is not affected by who is in the White House. I have worked with both President Trump and President (Joe) Biden. We have a new defense cooperation agreement. We have bipartisan support in Congress, which recognize the strategic importance of Greece as a bastion of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean region. American investments have flowed into Greece. Our cooperation is expanding. Our relationship is very strong and will become even stronger,” Mitsotakis said.

“I can say something that the prime minister cannot say,” Fukuyama noted.

“If Trump is re-elected in 2024, it will be a disaster for Europe. It will be a disaster,” Fukuyama said to applause from those present.

It is clear that he did not want to cooperate with NATO, he prefers Russia to Ukraine, that he is a friend of all new populist parties, he is a good friend of Viktor Orban (Hungarian Prime Minister). I think that his support for all institutional structures created after 1945 will be insignificant. But I am sure that this (Trump’s victory) will not happen,” Fukuyama said.

Fukuyama became famous for his 1992 book, The End of History and the Last Man, in which he predicted that the spread of liberal democracies throughout the world could signal the end point of humankind’s sociocultural evolution and become the final form of human government. His book caused a wide resonance in the scientific community and the media.

Despite the fact that Fukuyama’s predictions did not come true, his opinion is listened to.
