Automaker Ford plans to cut 2,900 jobs in Germany by the end of 2027.
⠀
“Ford wants to cut 4,000 of its 28,000 jobs in Europe by the end of 2027,” managing director Marcus Wassenberg said.
⠀
In Germany, 2.9 thousand jobs will be cut, which will especially affect the Cologne plant.
⠀
Wassenberg said Ford’s European business is losing money and cannot rely on its parent company to cover those losses.
⠀
“All the EV plans were generally more optimistic than the sales numbers we’re seeing now. This is not a purely Ford problem,” the company’s top executive said.
⠀
Ford’s European segment is also under pressure from strict environmental standards in the EU, including plans to ban the registration of new cars with internal combustion engines in the EU from 2035.

Earlier, the head of the works council of the German automaker Volkswagen, Daniela Cavallo, said that the concern intends to close at least three factories in Germany as part of cost-saving measures and thereby cut tens of thousands of jobs. In Germany, the company employs about 120 thousand people at ten factories. Volkswagen has not previously ruled out layoffs and closure of production facilities in Germany for the sake of savings. According to the head of the concern, Oliver Blume, the new course towards savings is associated with the desire of a number of competitors to settle in Europe and the decline in Germany’s competitiveness. According to media reports, layoffs may begin on July 1, 2025; supporters of austerity measures within the concern want to cut up to 30 thousand employees.
