Türkiye cannot move forward under the current Constitution, a new basic law has become a necessity, said the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“We express Turkey’s need for a libertarian constitution. Today I would like to make some points clear: The Constitution is at the top of the hierarchy of norms. It is a social contract. It is a written document. If we exclude the constitutions of 1921 and 1924, then all our constitutions were created under the directives of trusteeship and imposed on the people. We cannot continue to move forward with the current constitution, the framework of which was developed by the putschists, and the language reflects the consensus of problematic elites. I consider this a national duty,” Erdogan said in a speech on Monday.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly stated that Turkey needs a new constitution, which will be the key to the country’s further development; preparation of a new version of the basic law continues. According to him, Turkey needs a new constitution as a “salvation” from the current one, which is the result of a military coup.

The Turkish leader called on all political forces to actively participate in the development of the draft new constitution. In addition, Erdogan noted that the current Turkish constitution was adopted in 1982 and no longer meets the challenges of our time, despite a number of amendments.

To amend the constitution, the approval of 400 deputies is required; to submit an amendment to a referendum, the support of 360 deputies is required.
