Climate activists block a highway in Amsterdam.

Hundreds of climate activists from Extinction Rebellion blocked the A10 motorway in the south of Amsterdam on Saturday to demand Dutch banking group ING stop financing fossil fuels.

Hundreds of demonstrators reportedly took to the A10 highway on Saturday afternoon despite a ban on the demonstration by the municipality of Amsterdam, which called the activists’ plan to protest on the busy motorway irresponsible. At the same time, activists promised not to block the lane allocated for emergency services.

Climate activists Extinction Rebellion are protesting against ING’s actions, which they say are harming the climate, and are demanding the company stop investing in fossil fuels. Until 2014, the bank’s headquarters were located in a building next to the A10 highway.

It is noted that traffic was redirected to another highway due to the protest.

The demonstration takes place without incident.
