China and Georgia have raised the level of relations to a strategic partnership.

China and Georgia have upgraded their relationship to a strategic partnership, according to a joint statement by the countries.

Earlier, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili arrived at the opening of the 31st Summer Universiade in Chengdu, held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and later with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

“The parties held an in-depth exchange of views on international and regional issues of mutual interest, reached consensus on a wide range of issues, unanimously decided to upgrade relations to the level of strategic partnership,” the statement said.

The parties noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations on June 9, 1992, cooperation between the two parties in various fields has achieved fruitful results, the document emphasizes.


The parties also agreed, against the backdrop of a difficult international situation, to expand cooperation in such areas as politics, economics and culture, to jointly maintain peace, stability and development in the region and in the world.
