Brazil has removed its ambassador to Israel.

Brazil has removed its ambassador to Israel, Frederico Mayer, and will not immediately appoint a new one.

The Globo newspaper, citing special adviser to the Brazilian President Celso Amorim, reported last week that Mayer, who was previously recalled by the Brazilian authorities from Tel Aviv, will not return to his post.

“Brazil has removed its ambassador to Israel and will not immediately appoint a replacement, a diplomatic source told AFP on Wednesday, raising tensions between the two countries over Israel’s war in Gaza,” local media reported.

In February, the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo reported that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva recalled the country’s ambassador to Tel Aviv, Frederico Mayer, for consultations after Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz declared the Brazilian leader persona non grata.

In February, Lula da Silva said what was happening in the Gaza Strip was genocide and compared it to Adolf Hitler’s atrocities against the Jews. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called such statements crossing a red line.
