EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell said EU countries at a meeting of foreign ministers on Monday discussed the possibility of imposing sanctions against the Palestinian Hamas movement, which has been recognized as a terrorist organization by the European Union for many years, but “even more important” to prevent funding for the movement.

Earlier, a high-ranking European source told reporters that such personal sanctions could be introduced “against specific individuals, leaders.”

“The possibility of introducing sanctions against Hamas has been discussed by EU ministers, but an even more important task is to prevent Hamas from being financed,” he said at a press conference in Brussels.
⠀
At the same time, Borrell admitted that there is no consensus either at the EU level or at the G7 level on a call to Israel for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, he recalled that all EU countries unanimously called for the establishment of humanitarian pauses in Gaza.

On Tuesday, the US Treasury announced the introduction of new sanctions against senior officials of the Hamas movement ruling in the Gaza Strip and the mechanisms of Iranian financing of Palestinian groups.
