Swedish citizen and employee of one of the EU institutions Johan Floderus appeared in court in Iran, in Brussels he is considered innocent, the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell said in a statement.

“The trial of Swedish citizen and EU official Johan Floderus began yesterday. At the EU, we have made it clear from the outset that Floderus is innocent. There is no basis for depriving him of his liberty. The EU continues to call for the immediate release of Floderus,” the head of EU diplomacy said in a written statement.

Borrell added that he raises this issue when contacting the Iranian authorities, demanding the release of the Swede. According to him, the EU, together with Sweden, which provides consular support to the prisoner, is seeking additional information on his case.
