Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who was hospitalized on April 5 due to complications from a blood cancer, has been transferred from the intensive care unit of Milan’s San Raffaele clinic, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported on Sunday.

Citing sources in the clinic, the publication said that Berlusconi’s health condition allowed him to be moved to a regular ward.

Berlusconi was admitted to Milan’s San Raffaele hospital on Wednesday. His doctors circulated a medical bulletin saying that the 86-year-old politician was being treated for a lung infection due to chronic leukemia.

On Thursday, the politician’s attending physicians said that his condition continues to improve, the clinical picture prescribes his continued stay in the intensive care unit. Their written statement stated that over the past 72 hours, the patient had experienced a continuous improvement in respiratory and renal function, with successful control of leukocyte growth and the inflammatory syndrome.

On Monday, they reported that the therapy prescribed by the policy “is producing the expected results, which allows for cautious optimism.”
