For many Germans, the reasons why Berlin should support Kyiv are not obvious, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in an interview with Bloomberg.
⠀
“Many people in the United States ask the question: “Ukraine is quite far from us, why is it important for us?” This is true not only in the United States, but also here in Germany. People see inflation,” the politician said.
⠀
Europe, however, Baerbock added, “needs the support of American friends and colleagues more than ever.” According to her, “it is necessary to show the world that the allies will stand on the side of Ukraine as long as necessary.”
⠀
Earlier, the head of the German Ministry of Defense Boris Pistorius reacted emotionally to the request of the mayor of Kiev Vitaliy Klitschko to supply the Ukrainian troops with long-range Taurus missiles – the minister emphasized that Berlin had already provided extensive military assistance to Kiev.
⠀
At the same time, Bundestag deputy Roderich Kiesewetter announced the day before the imminent dispatch of Taurus missiles after “progress at the UN” and a meeting of the contact group on the defense of Ukraine in the “Ramstein format.”
⠀
As Spiegel previously wrote, Berlin is considering whether to supply Kyiv with missiles with a range of up to 500 kilometers. German experts are discussing whether it is possible to program the missiles so that they cannot be used to strike Russian territory.
