Aung San Suu Kyi was transferred to the government residence.

The authorities of Myanmar have transferred the country’s former state adviser (in fact, the prime minister), Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, from prison in the capital Naypyidaw to one of the government residences, a source in the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, which is headed by the disgraced politician, said.

Earlier, a party spokeswoman said that Myanmar’s military authorities plan to transfer 78-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi from prison to house arrest.

“On Monday evening, Aung San Suu Kyi was transferred to the government’s VIP complex,” an NLD source said.

The Myanmar military came to power on February 1, 2021, using the constitutional mechanism for the transfer of power in an emergency. They accused the former ruling NLD party of rigging the November 2020 general election in their favor.

Arrested on the day of the transfer of power to the military, Aung San Suu Kyi was kept under house arrest for a long time. She has faced numerous charges, including corruption, violation of the law on state secrets and the state of emergency during the coronavirus pandemic. After the announcement of verdicts in a number of criminal cases, the former state adviser was transferred from house arrest to the central prison of the capital of Myanmar, Naypyidaw, to serve her sentence.
