At the request of scientists, the WHO smallpox virus will be forced to rename

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the World Health Organization will soon rename the monkeypox virus.

“WHO is also working with partners and experts from around the world to change the name of the monkeypox virus, its branches and the disease it causes. We will announce new names soon,” Ghebreyesus said.

More than 30 scientists have asked WHO to rename the disease. They argue that the use of geographical regions and the name of animals in the name of the disease should be avoided.

To date, there have been more than 1,600 confirmed cases of monkeypox with about 1,500 suspected cases in 39 countries.
